The Cure For Pain : Prologue

theseriouslygreysfanfiction:

Authors: Bright and Twisty

Summary: [AU Set during the 18th Century in what is known as the 13 Colonies (or colonial America), this fanfiction puts some of our favorite Grey’s Anatomy characters in a whole new setting.]

In the midst of building a new country that will value freedom and liberty Arizona Robbins and her husband strive to find their own freedom.

Disclamer : One of us studied in the medical field and the other studied history, but we’re pretty sure that a few anachronistic mistakes and scientifically questionable elements did sneak through our conveniently widened filters… Most of our efforts were concentrated on the goal of writing the best story we could. So hey if you spot a mistake feel free to let us know, but keep in mind that we’re all fans of a show where McDreamy is sucked out of a plane and keeps his perfect hair and can still walk around, so we should all be able to tolerate a certain level of creative liberties.

This is our first fic, reviews are appreciated :)

Home **Arizona and Callie**

pagingdrtorres:

Callie bristled slightly at the comparison with Mark. Maybe it was fair and maybe it wasn’t, but nobody could ever accuse Mark of not having his daughter’s best interests at heart. He’d been on board from the start and there was nothing he wouldn’t do to keep her safe. She actually worried a little for Sofia’s prospective suitors in the future.

It broke her heart seeing Arizona so torn up about anything, especially something she couldn’t do anything about. She knew full well that there was nothing she could do to alleviate the pain, and if Amelia would make it better, then so be it… But that didn’t mean she wasn’t wary of the consequences of letting a recovering addict into her family’s life. If Arizona wanted to see Amelia there was nothing she could do about it – not that she would ever begrudge her wife a chance to mend a broken friendship and to put to rest the grief and pain she’d been running from for so long – but Sofia was a whole different playing field. Letting Amelia into Sofia’s life wasn’t just Arizona’s decision. It wasn’t even just Arizona and Callie’s decision – Mark had to have a say in it, too.

“You don’t have anything to apologise for,” she began. The whole situation was a mess, clearly, but that was life. “It doesn’t sound selfish,” she said tentatively. She saw how close Arizona was to tears but she wasn’t entirely sure how to fix that. Normally she would’ve put her arm around her, but she could feel that Arizona was still tense and she knew that unwanted physical contact would only make the situation worse. “It sounds fair. She’s your friend – it makes sense that you could both help each other through things better than anyone else.” She was a little surprised that she felt absolutely no jealousy whilst saying this. But she knew it was true: there were things she’d been through that only Mark could help with, and it only made sense that it’d be the same for Arizona. She could listen to stories and memories of Timothy for the rest of her life but at the end of the day that was all she could do: listen. If Amelia could help, Callie wanted that for Arizona, and maybe it’d be good for the both of them. When George had died, talking it over with Mark had helped her a lot. Not that Mark had ever really liked her ex-husband, but he’d known him whilst he was alive, which was more than she could say about Timothy.

“You have to help her. She’s your friend, she’s your Mark. But without the sex,” she frowned momentarily. “I don’t think you could live with yourself if you didn’t help her, but I don’t think her being in Sofia’s life right now is such a great idea – no, let me finish,” she held her hands up, pre-empting an interruption. “You two have a lot of stuff you need to sort out. She obviously means a lot to you, and I’m not saying never, I’m saying not right now. Not when she’s so fragile, not when your friendship is still so shaky and not when we haven’t even discussed it with Mark, because he gets a say too.”

Her surprise at Callie’s statement quickly made her head lift from her hands. She studied Callie’s features for any sign of jealousy and she was surprised to admit that she didn’t spy any. Her wife’s features seemed as trusting as her tone, she really seemed to understand the need that Arizona had expressed, the need for Amelia’s support to finally face her grief. Arizona nodded her appreciation and felt a faint smile appear on her lips, it meant a lot to her to feel supported and trusted. Arizona’s hand left her lap and reached for Callie’s, her fingers slid against Callie’s palm and she gave her wife’s hand a grateful squeeze. “Thanks” she whispered too emphasise her gesture. She couldn’t retain a very brief frown when Callie mentioned Mark’s name and the word sex a little too close in the same sentence for Arizona’s taste. Yes she hade been the one who had compared her friendship with Amelia to Callie’s relationship with Mark and mentioning the «without the sex» thing, but still hearing Callie saying it made her slightly uncomfortable. Perhaps she was the one to blame for that, perhaps her comparison had been of poor taste and maybe throwing the sex thing in Callie’s face had been uncalled for. “Well yes, we were very close.” She emphasised on the passed tense. “But I have to regain her trust since I abandoned her when she needed me.” She said very conscious of the task at hands. She knew that winning someone’s trust back could require great efforts, but she also strongly believed it was possible. She could only think of how she would win back her old friend’s trust for a few seconds before Callie shook her away from her plans. Arizona was about to interject when her wife held her hand up to let her know that she wanted to finish her statement before hearing Arizona’s opinion. The blonde bit her tongue and sank a little deeper on the couch, remaining silence when she had strong opinions was not one of her strength. In the end she was glad she could manage to wait for Callie’s whole statement, hearing the whole thing made her more comfortable than the first half of it had. For a second there she had been scared that Callie would force her to keep two important spheres of her life separated, her familial life and her rekindling friendship with Amelia. Of course Callie was right, Amelia needed to get strong on her feet before getting involved in their family’s life. It was only fair that Amelia needed to gain Callie’s trust before she could get anywhere near their daughter. In fact wasn’t it exactly what Arizona had told her? That it would be a process. “Yeah, you’re right. It’s what I told her. That she would have to get your trust before she could be in Sofia’s life.” Arizona admitted. She looked at Callie with a shy smile “Thank you for remaining the rational one in this relationship tonight.” Her yes drifted from Callie’s and went to their still linked hands. “A part of me hates it, but most of me appreciates it.” Her eyes went back to Callie’s reassuring brown eyes. She was used to being the rational one, Callie tended to be more emotionally driven than her, but tonight she had dove into emotions and thankfully Callie hadn’t followed her lead. The two of them driven by emotions would have probably led to a thundered force fight, but Callie had known better and Arizona was thankful for that.

Arizona sighed her agreement as once more Mark was mentioned. It wasn’t always easy to accept Mark’s constant involvement in their lives, it was part of the whole co-parenting thing and she was aware of that, but still it was hard enough to be two in a marriage having to take Mark’s very legitimate input wasn’t always easy. She was right he deserved a say in the matter, she would never deny him that. After all, all they really all had in mind was their daughter’s best interest.

For a few seconds she remained seated on the couch in silence, her fingers still intertwined with Callie’s. Slowly a grin formed on her lips. Hadn’t their plan been to spend a quiet night together? Surely it wasn’t too late for that. Arizona turned her head toward Callie and with a mischievous grin asked; “How about we eat that diner I’ve prepared, so we can finally get to that promisingly delectable pound cake?”

doctorkepner asked: Prompt! Arizona sees Callie for the first time from afar at Seattle Grace :)

Arizona was infuriated. She stood in the gallery and just couldn’t believe her eyes! Who was the attending standing over her patient? She had requested the Head of ortho! This was an important case! The Chief had been clear: this wasn’t a case she could mess up. She had just been promoted to Head of peds, she couldn’t mess up already! She couldn’t loose the child of one of the hospital’s most generous donors. Every child was important, but this one could just cost her her career! She had asked for the Head of ortho specifically! The board said that it would be him! So why was this woman she had never seen before standing over her patient?

Arizona shooed off the few residents who were observing and closed the gallery. She didn’t give a damn if this was a teaching hospital she wouldn’t tolerate spectators to admire what was bound to become the biggest failure of her still young career. The patient was already opened, it was too late to back down. This was a complicated procedure she couldn’t risk barging in and jeopardize this lady-surgeon’s attention and focus.

She stood in front of the gallery’s glass and watched carefully, she studied every move the attending made, her eyes never left the unknown doctor’s hands. As the minutes passed Arizona slowly –very slowly- started to get comfortable with the attending’s approach. She was cautious and her hands were steady, assured and strong. Arizona slowly started to trust the medical abilities of this woman. Until finally Arizona could breathe again. The procedure had gone perfectly, now they could only hope that the patient would wake up from the anaesthesia and have a nice recovery. Arizona rushed out of the gallery and hurried to the OR. She needed to know this woman’s name.

As she approached she quickly realised that the attending had already left the OR. Arizona asked one of the nurses: “The attending, the one who just operated. What’s her name?” The nurse quickly answered: “Dr Torres, Dr Callie Torres.” Arizona nodded her gratitude and walked out of the OR. Callie Torres… It was a name she wanted to remember. She sighed when she realised that this Dr. Torres had been asked to report to the chief. It was her patient, but the chief had been adamant about this, every surgeon involved on this case had to report to him. In fact now that she thought about it he was probably the one who had changed her initial plan to get the Head of ortho and who had requested Dr Callie Torres instead.

Callie, that had to be short for something…
